Japan Consumption Tax Reclaims
Consumption tax reclaim is a key expense management service sought especially by multinational companies with business travel and related expenditures in Japan. Multinationals actively reclaim for VAT refunds in Europe, for example, among over 100 countries worldwide. The VAT equivalent in Japan is the consumption tax, which is levied at 5% on most Japan expenditures. While National Tax Agency Japan requires that all original travel or non-travel related receipts accompany reclaims, SANSEI can guide a client into the most efficient approach for maintaining the invoices.
*Note: In Japan, a company can file for refunds back to 5 years if (a) the company has no permanent establishment (PE) in Japan, and (b) the company has not been filing for refunds prior. And, a company with a PE in Japan can file back to 1 year – which is important as many claims may have been filed as incomplete.
In order to file a consumption tax return a taxpayer initially needs to file for registration with the tax office. Thereupon, the tax office will issue a taxpayer ID number. SANSEI can prepare the oft required “Application for Appointment of Tax Agent” or “Application for Changing of Tax Agent” for the client company, file the consumption tax returns, and carry forward with all tax office negotiations and reviews.
